Promoting Equity and Social Justice in K–12 Schools: A Critical Exploration of Outcomes and Implications of Hip-Hop-Based Education

Abstract

The purpose of this session is to present three case studies to highlight the ways Hip Hop in institutional and non-institutional educational settings operates to bring awareness to the impact of institutional oppressions on youth, communities and schools and to explore possibilities for reimagining pedagogies to combat effects of social stratification. Results indicate educators empower disconnected youth and critical consciousness is a lever for critique, imagination and transformation. Youth rappers value relationships, emotional expression more over time as well-being scores also increase over time. Novice Hip Hop dancers develop social-emotionally by engaging dance as a therapeutic and educational venue, intermediates dance for mastery of aesthetics and catharsis, while experts dance to preserve Hip Hop dance as a cultural practice.
