Postgraduate Reflections on Graduate Teaching Training and Experiences

Fri, April 28, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

Reducing adjustment time and increasing comfort with a new faculty career benefits the new professor, the students, and the college. One way universities prepare their graduate students is through providing teaching experiences and training. This study reports survey results what nine recent postgraduate teaching faculty thought about these experiences and how they prepared the faculty for their current positions. Most found graduate teaching to be beneficial, particularly in terms of familiarity with classroom processes and student interactions. The most common desire was for greater variety in types of classes and students taught to prepare them for faculty careers. Understanding how to better train and provide opportunities is essential for the profession.
