Belonging in Historically Black Colleges and Universities: Understanding the Perceptions of Latino Male Students

Abstract

College completion is important for the rapidly growing Latino population, and particularly critical for Latino male students who face significant barriers in their educational experience. This qualitative study examined persistence of ten Latino male students by examining their perceptions of sense of belonging within an emerging postsecondary opportunity, HBCUs. Through one-on-one, semi-structured interviews, the students described the individuals, relationships, and experiences that influenced their sense of belonging in HBCUs. Implications for research and practice are offered.
