This methodological paper discusses the potential misuse of theory bits in qualitative data analysis. Theory bits are unsubstantiated points of meaning which the researcher has deductively drawn from a fragment of data. Theory bits may distort analysis because they grab our attention and they sound so correct. Today research continues to confront the challenge of presenting credible qualitative evidence.
Showing evidence increasingly requires the visualization of complex multivariate meanings. As social science researchers adopt technological innovations in data visualization, new methods are emerging to address the potential misuse from theory bits. Particular attention is given in this study to honor the inductive methodological tenants of qualitative inquiry which are increasingly challenged by the rapidly evolving technological influences of deductive tools.
