Abstract: While immigrant students bring transnational sensibilities and abilities to navigate between cultural communities, they also have unique needs related to learning a new language, negotiating the stress of migration and navigating conditions of poverty in the US. As frontline leaders in education, principals must respond to the increased complexity of serving the growing number of immigrant, refugee and undocumented youth in US schools. Our conceptual paper proposes a framework for leadership in the context of immigration that considers school leaders work with immigrant students and how current policies and controversies surrounding immigration shape leadership practice. In so doing, we identify implications for leadership training and practice, as well as laying out an agenda for future research.
