This study examined the impact of research spin on medical students’ (MS) comprehension and epistemic justification strategies during clinical decision-making. Would spin impact clinical decision-making and comprehension, and if MS training was deficient in research knowledge or data interpretation skills, would non-evidence based justifications emerge? Fifty-three MS participated in a two-group randomized experiment, reading science abstracts. We tested comprehension and coded written justifications. Analyses revealed a main effect of the experimental condition (spin versus no-spin), Pillai’s Trace = .18, F(4,46) = 2.541, p= .05, after controlling for prior knowledge and MS year. There was a significant between-subjects’ effect for comprehension items, t (2.910) 51, p=.005.
