The researchers utilized a multiphase mixed methods study design to examine the impacts of an alternative high school model. An independent learning center (ILC) school design was initiated for students who had previously dropped out of, or struggled in, a traditional high school setting. Both explanatory and exploratory sequential design components were utilized to provide context for measured differences in hope and self-regulation, and to incorporate student voice into the evaluation of the program. Students enrolled in the ILC were found to experience significantly higher levels of hope and demonstrated higher self-efficacy for self-regulated learning. Student perspectives on which elements of the program were most supportive are discussed.
