A Case Study of Experiences, Challenges, and Perspectives for Low-Income Colombian Adolescents in a Summer Camp for Gifted Children

Mon, May 1, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

Gifted education research and programs in Latin America are scarce (Blanco, Ríos & Benavides, 2004).There is still urgency to raise awareness on its importance among educational policy makers and the educational community (de Soriano Alencar, de Souza Fleith, & Arancibia, 2009). Colombia is not strange to such a reality and gifted education programs are very limited or inexistent. This qualitative case study collects student experiences, challenges and perspectives after participating in a summer camp in the US. Among the findings, linguistic, cultural, intellectual challenges were identified; perceptions and the experiences before, during and after the camp were constructed and provide support for gifted education in the Latin-American context, especially considering underrepresented communities and low income gifted and talented students.
