The onus of engagement on students alone is misplaced. This paper examines student engagement from a culturally responsive leadership perspective. Drawing on research conducted with school leaders in South Ontario Canada, it seeks to reposition discourse and practices on student engagement within a social justice and culturally responsive framework. Student engagement increases when students see themselves in the curriculum through texts and other activities. It is the hope that this work can add to the discourse on student engagement, in particular diverse students.
