Moving From Lens to Mirror: Decolonizing Observational Research

Mon, May 1, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: River Level, Room 7B

Abstract

As we set out on our observational study, our purpose was to learn how thinking with theories (Jackson & Mazzei, 2012, 2013) could help us decolonize observational research in school classrooms. The goal of this study was to understand how our theoretical frames shape how we view data collected through observational methods. The research questions that guided our inquiry included, “What can we tell about learning in a classroom by examining instruction through three theoretical frames? What did we learn about the research process by examining instruction through three theoretical frames? And, what did we learn about our individual perspectives as researchers and teachers by examining instruction through three theoretical frames?”
