Like Eisner (1988; 1992), we believe there are interrelated factors that contribute to schools becoming fertile ground for empowering teachers and cultivating innovation, which includes ecologically minded teaching. In fact, we have found the theoretical recommendations made by Eisner over two decades ago to closely mirror what we have observed practically. In this paper, which is not based on an empirical study but rather the experiences and interpretations of the authors, we highlight six factors that contribute to a culture in an urban charter school in which ecologically minded teachers thrive.
