Beyond Teacher Education as Concession: A Decolonizing Framework for Equity Teaching, Learning, and Unlearning

Fri, April 28, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Grand Hyatt San Antonio, Floor: Second Floor, Lone Star Ballroom Salon D

Abstract

This decolonizing framework for teacher education incorporates the history of resisting inherent inequities and pushes new constructs of resistance teaching in a neo-imperialist era. The task of a decolonizing framework in service of the preparative learning of teachers is to mitigate the imperial whiteness of education and to resist the ongoing colonial structures that continually re-render and instantiate our history of inequality in American schools. As such, throughout global colonization, schools have been a comprehensive vehicle for the oppression of diverse communities and the reproduction of imperialist Anglo norms and structures. Therefore, this teacher education framework challenges imperialistic assumptions about the nature of public schooling, and offers a decolonizing approach to preparing professionals for transformative practice.
