In this paper we report the preliminary findings of a study of a research-practice partnership designed to enhance the leadership coaching capacities of experienced school and district leaders in 12 rural, high-poverty school districts in the southeastern United States. The purpose of the two-year partnership, called the Leadership Learning Community (LLC), is to provide cross-district, job-embedded, and personalized leadership and leadership coaching development opportunities to nine school leaders and six leadership coaches. Leadership development activities occurred in professional communities and job-embedded coaching sessions. The findings of the design-based study highlight the possibilities and challenges of developing the leadership coaching capacities of experienced school leaders to assist school leaders in leading sustainable school improvement efforts through a professional community.
