Mon, May 1, 8:15 to 10:15am, Grand Hyatt San Antonio, Floor: Second Floor, Lone Star Ballroom Salon B

Abstract

This qualitative phenomenology used a coculturation perspective to investigate the lived experience of teaching literacy to ELs in mainstream elementary classrooms. Two shared experiences emerged regarding teachers’ knowledge about literacy and English Learners. Findings indicated that teaching ELs strengthened educators as they broadened their perspectives and saw the individuality of ELs. This study revealed that teachers grew professionally and were able to help all students due to their experience with teaching ELs.
