The purpose of this paper is to describe seven existing models of disability identity development and describe how this review informed the development of a new measure of disability identity development, Disability Identity Development Scale (DIDS). While the analyses are ongoing, the process of developing the scale, grounding in the literature, challenges encountered along the way and preliminary findings are presented. To date, the online scale has been administered to 620 adults (over 18 years of age) who self-identify with any disability. The 102 items will be examined for item refinement and through a series of exploratory factor analyses to ensure alignment with the theoretical framework and later analyses will examine the external relations among the constructs and subject characteristics.
