We examine the development of racist ideology in the United States and South Africa. We also examine the evolution, over a 30 year period, of attitudes and ideologies associated with black resistance to school segregation and racism in both countries. As a secondary goal, we aim to trace some of the actual connections among black political thinkers in the two countries. Specifically, we explore cultural modes of resistance to segregated schooling in these two contexts with a hope to inform our contemporary understanding of racial segregation. This exploration considers ways in which Black leaders, teachers and administrators constructed resistance to segregated education within an oppressive context.
