Writing to Live: Stories From a Latina Mother and Daughter Writing Workshop

Mon, May 1, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 3

Abstract

This inquiry describes Latina adolescent girls and their mothers’ experiences and perspectives as participants in Somos Escritoras/We are Writers, a third space (Gutiérrez, 2008), that exists in the urban Southwest. Somos Escritoras is a writing workshop for Latina girls and their mothers that aims at creating a welcoming space for mothers and daughters to engage in in the sharing of knowledge and stories from their lived experiences through the use of oral storytelling, writing, and art. My analysis focuses on the stories shared by mothers and daughters and what we can learn about who they are, what matters to them and what they envision for their futures.
