Abstract

Much of the scholarly work addressing educational opportunity for Latinas/os is framed in terms of the "achievement gap" or what Latina/o students need to achieve parity with their white peers. We argue that theories of Latina/o education have responded to the ethno-racial, historical conditions of Latinos in the United States and that tracing the genealogy of ideas about Latinos’ ethno-racial identities in schools over the last century allows us to consider future directions for the field—to look forward by first looking backward. We end our review by highlighting research paradigms arising from Latina/o and Indigenous experiences and communities and argue they will provide the tools to engage with second-century Latinidades.
