Abstract

Sampling designs in research are described as probability or purposive. Researchers conducting focus group research are concerned with sampling’s influence on group membership, homogeneity, interaction, and generalizability. Cluster analysis methods can inform sampling designs. We introduce a sampling design with cluster analysis to address concerns of researchers conducting focus group research. Using this design, researchers can create either homogeneous or heterogeneous groups of participants using purposively selected parameters. The proposed design is computationally simple; exploits current sampling, statistic, and research design methods; is useful for identifying both homogeneous and heterogeneous groups; and addresses concerns of both qualitative and quantitative researchers. The design is described for focus group research but is applicable for use in other research scenarios.
