This qualitative case study continues to expand the discussion of the diversity of HSIs by examining Hispanic-Serving Research Institutions and the experience of Latino/a graduate students. For our context and framework we consider the history of and current research on HSIs, as well as related literature on racial battle fatigue. Our analysis revealed five themes: battling fear and ignorance, moving past complacency, including lost voices, picking up the institution’s slack, and capitalizing on possibility. Our findings highlight delayed institutional change by recognizing the challenges that must be addressed to support Latino/a graduate students success at Hispanic Serving Research Institutions—an institution and community of students often ignored in the HSI conversation.
