Fri, April 28, 8:15 to 10:15am, Grand Hyatt San Antonio, Floor: Fourth Floor, Texas Ballroom Salon B

Abstract

Languages convey nuances unique to our own worldviews, cultures, and traditions. This paper will explore the impact that Hawaiian immersion camps have had on increasing the language proficiency of our students, developing place-based experiential learning Hawaiian language curricula, introducing our students to ancestral Kanaka practices, and grooming the next generations of Native Hawaiians to become leaders within the Hawaiian community. Furthermore, it will demonstrate how the lessons learned from these language immersion camps may be expanded beyond language programs and into the field of Education.
