How Community University Partnerships Facilitate Equity: A Dialectic Between Dialogue and Practice

Sun, April 30, 8:15 to 9:45am, Grand Hyatt San Antonio, Floor: Second Floor, Bowie A

Abstract

The paper’s purpose is multifaceted. First, this paper proposes to define equal educational opportunity as understood and practiced by a local community organization. Second, this paper demonstrates that it is within Latino families that we find effective units of social change. The paper shows how parental engagement can impact education in our schools and community. Thirdly, the paper asserts that researchers are social activists, denying the false dichotomy of university-community roles. Fourthly, the paper demonstrates the employment of ethical standards for constructing partnerships between the academy and local communities. By means of culturally responsive research methods, we enact a humanizing relationship based on relational consciousness (dialogue, reciprocity) allowing us to work in unity to uncover and shape equal educational opportunities.
