This paper reports on a research project exploring pedagogies of social transformation across schools and community organizations in the complex urban environment of Santiago de Chile. Cultural and pedagogical sites include K-12 schools, a student movement for educational equity, a national arts center, and a national LGBTIQ/queer rights organization. The study offers insight into forms of communitarian public pedagogies within and beyond schools that elicit imagination and practices oriented toward social transformation, with attention to intersecting experiences of pedagogical actors and intended learners within the public sphere. Findings also address patterned challenges of institutionalization, isolation, and distributed leadership encountered by citizen initiatives and social movements. Possibilities are presented for fostering partnerships among disparate justice workers in urban communities.
