This study is a narrative from the first Black professor at Spruce Mountain College and how within a 20 year span, his hiring marked the beginning of a concerted effort of the college to desegregate which was bookended with administrative decisions to diffuse multicultural center personnel, resources, and programming. The present narrative is a cautionary tale of post-racial idealism supplanting racial realism, the awareness of and attention to matters of race on campus, and the impact on the quality of support and programming for students of color.
