We used an online survey administered to teachers from 2011-2014 to examine the degree to which behavioral integrity, competence, goodwill, and trustworthiness are significant contributors to a principal’s Motivating language use. The survey consisted of (1) the Motivating Language Scale (2) the Behavioral Integrity Scale and (3) the Source Credibility Scale, which encompasses competence, goodwill, and trustworthiness. The response rate for teachers, at this Title I elementary school in a southwestern urban school district, was over 95%. There were statistically significant correlations between Motivating Language and each independent variable. Each year, the multiple regression results were statistically significant and the independent variables that significantly contributed to the regression varied. We discuss these results along with ideas for future research.
