Fri, April 28, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the experiences of Black and Latino males in an OST (out of school time) program focused on manhood development and violence prevention. Programs that challenge youth's definition of masculinity have had positive impacts on the academic, health, and life trajectories of young men of color. This study uses a mixed-method research design including data from student focus groups and a survey. Data for were derived from a 2-year evaluation conducted by NYU’s Metropolitan Center for Urban Education during the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 academic years. Findings revealed that Black and Latino males in the OST program merged traditional as well as more progressive norms about manhood.
