As the population and student demographics within mathematics classrooms continue to shift, becoming increasingly diverse, attention to teaching strategies that provide equitable opportunities for all students to participate in the mathematical learning, has become appropriate and essential to students’ success With a focus on equity, we especially find it salient for the teaching and learning for working with students from diverse races, ethnicities and cultures. Findings from this study shows that when teachers deliberately leverage students’ connections to culture and outside school experiences, the can carefully plan effective teaching strategies that will promote students’ participation through familiar contexts. This paper presents findings from two years of data collection and analyses from three teachers.
