Rethinking Black Masculinity: An Anticolonial and Critical Pedagogical Analysis of the Current State of Men of Color

Sat, April 29, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Hemisfair Ballroom 1

Abstract

Over the past two decades or so, many studies on black masculinity have emerged and examined men of color, particularly black men, from a sociological, racial, and cultural standpoint. However, not many studies have explored the historical intersection between black masculinity and the legacy of slavery alongside institutional racism and white patriarchy. Drawing on critical race theory and data collected over the course of a year, this case study examines this intersection. This study theorizes how the legacy of slavery, institutional racism, and white patriarchy might have impacted the way many men of African descent have performed their maleness and goes on to offer recommendations stemming from findings for further research on black masculinity
