Session Type: Symposium
The public discourse of education in the media must satisfy the requirements of federal and state bureaucracies, the requirements of accrediting agencies, educational reports, grant proposals, and such that resonate with that discourse. We all know how to play the chords of education in this “major key.” This symposium explores the rich secondary language developed by teachers and students to testify to the phenomenology of the classroom. We call it education in a minor key. Here, we name only a few minor educational chords – wonder, boredom, and courage - while the discussant will examine their commonalities and invite the audience to provide more examples of their own.
Wonder in Education - A.G. Rud, Washington State University
On Educational Boredom - Chris Higgins, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Courage in a New Key - Barbara S. Stengel, Vanderbilt University
