Session Type: Symposium
This symposium integrates studies, from a global perspective, of the impact of academic workload on students’ stress and well-being in rigorous college preparatory programs, including the College Board’s Advanced Placement (AP) courses and the International Baccalaureate’s (IB) Diploma Programme (DP). These studies reflect the increasing concerns among educators, parents, and students themselves about the effects of academic demands on students’ mental and physical well-being (see e.g., Conner & Pope, 2014; Conner, Pope & Galloway, 2009). The presentations highlight findings from several current large-scale investigations of these topics. Several of the presenters in this symposium have studied the academic and psychosocial experiences of high school students for a decade or longer.
