53.080 - And Then What? Aesthetics, Ethics, and the Senses in and After the Visual and Digital Turns

Abstract

This symposium opens space for reflecting upon innovations that include and exceed assumptions within visual and digital turns that have impacted debates in literacy. We challenge the visual-digital couplet and sensorial hierarchies:

• how has educational work been impacted by the visual-digital turn and limited by dominant understandings of visual culture as ocularcentric and perceiver-driven?
• in regard to digital futures, what alternative ways of understanding contemporary education are available?
• what theoretico-methodological challenges arise when engaging genealogical, Indigenous, multimodal, and new materialist approaches to research beyond the visual-digital couplet?

An historicisation of western visual-verbal-sensorial relations and practical examples of contemporary sites that participate in and challenge such a history, including Indigenous communities and early childhood education are elaborated.
