Session Type: Symposium
This session conceives of students, teachers, and parents as socially conscious actors who create their own political spaces for deliberation and collective action within a broader agenda of school accountability, neoliberal reforms, and high-stakes sanctions. Composed of three empirical studies, the panel will: 1) investigate how urban students utilize digital media to expand discursive space and formulate a collective student voice; 2) describe how teachers of color engage in everyday political actions to reclaim the democratic purpose of schooling; and 3) discuss the participation of parents of English Learners in district-level decision-making processes.
