The development of leaders’ Emotional Intelligence (EI) is widely accepted as essential to effective performance in the corporate arena, but to educators, the concept of EI within school leadership is still new. The development of social, emotional, and cognitive skills is the missing link in school leaders’ preparation. This symposium features research focused on principals’ social and emotional skills in different school settings, and provides evidence of how these skills can improve principals’ leadership effectiveness, relationships, quality of life, and well-being, and create safe workplaces. These findings will markedly advance the field and contribute to the design and development of future training and preparation of school leaders.
