Session Type: Symposium
This panel asks how educators can effectively facilitate inclusive, critical, and aesthetically-alert communities of learners and leverage diverse voices in online learning environments. Four case studies explore (1) the role of multimedia and multimodality in fostering social presence; (2) the technological supports of a writing program that promote diverse student voices; (3) the practice of video-chat via a social network for building relationships between mentors and youth; and (4) the collaborative creation of artifacts through a digital whiteboard to expand understandings of and opportunities for literacy. These cases are framed theoretically by an exploration of the construct of digital social presence and the building of authentic and generative learning relationships in online and in-person experiences.
