Session Type: Symposium
This session is comprised of scholars whose work examines the intersections of Ethnic Studies and Education to understand the experiences of students and teachers of color. We present critical qualitative research papers that: 1) Examine young people’s racial identities through photovoice in a Raza Studies course; 2) Explore curricular interventions and pedagogies of Ethnic Studies-prepared Filipino American teachers; 3) Utilize Ethnic Studies pedagogy to develop critical consciousness and racial literacies; and 4) Examine youth participatory action research as an extension of Ethnic Studies pedagogy. We aim to demonstrate how engaging Ethnic Studies bolsters 21st century literacies, civic engagement, and academic development. We present ways educators can connect Ethnic Studies toward action in the service of historically marginalized students and communities.
