14.032 - Data Use for Improving Teaching and Expanding Opportunities to Learn: Implications for Policy and Practice

Thu, April 27, 12:00 to 1:30pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 217 A

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium presents findings on teachers’ uses of accountability and test data and the impact on instructional improvement. Specifically the papers discuss: 1) how teachers’ uses of data for instructional differentiation expand or limit learning opportunities for students; 2) the influence of accountability policies and evaluation systems on teachers’ sensemaking about the role of data use for high-quality teaching; 3) teachers’ beliefs and uses of test data on literacy; and 4) teachers’ analysis of math assessment data for instructional improvement in workgroups. Together, the papers contribute to the field’s understanding of the potential and pitfalls of using testing and accountability data, how they constrain or enable instructional improvement, and whether it expands or constricts students’ opportunities to learn.
