Abstract
This panel examines historical and contemporary efforts to promote equal educational opportunity in the US. The papers explore how ideas about race and racial (in)justice intersect with the public and private purposes of schooling to facilitate or impede these efforts. Taken together, the papers enrich our understanding of the meaning, promise and challenges of achieving equal educational opportunity in the US.
