Session Summary

18.053 - Challenging the Status Quo: Invoking Social Justice Leadership in Ed.D. Programs

Thu, April 27, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Grand Hyatt San Antonio, Floor: Fourth Floor, Crockett C

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

In today’s educational context, which is characterized by widening inequalities and massive demographic shifts, preparing educational leaders equipped with the knowledge, skills, and orientations to work for social justice in their institutions is paramount. Given the dearth of research regarding the preparation of leaders in social-justice focused EdD programs, in this session, we provide a lens into the work of four different EdD programs with this focus across the United States. Each paper takes up a situated understanding of the notion of “social justice” and describes how the researchers are operationalizing this understanding through different facets of their programs, as well as resisting the status quo of hegemonic notions of both educational leadership and the doctorate more generally.
