Session Type: Symposium
A great deal of attention has been given to hip-hop in education, which is rooted in Reality Pedagogy (Emdin, 2012), an approach to teaching and learning that is based on the premise that teaching and learning is a complex and multilayered process that requires as much focus on the social dynamics among people within the classroom as the content being delivered. If this makes sense, then it stands to reason that individuals’ mental health can also be positively impacted for the same underlying reasons. The purpose of this symposium, however, is to draw attention to the myriad ways hip-hop culture can be infused into mental health and wellness interventions/programs, which is growing in popularity, but has garnered far less attention.
