Session Type: Roundtable Session
In this proposed symposium, we present multiple perspectives on the implementation of Poetry Inside Out or “PIO,” an innovative literacy program. In PIO participants translate world-class poems in their original language (e.g., Spanish) into English. In this session, we explore the knowledge constructed by youth researchers (college undergraduates and high school students) and the adults who work with them (university-based researchers and teachers). Drawing on the construct of multiliteracies, and using ethnographic and discourse analytic approaches, the five papers, individually and collectively, attempt to address two overarching questions: How PIO supports students’ development of multiliteracies and; 2) what challenges and opportunities exist in doing ethnographic and sociolinguistic work in an intergenerational research team that crosses traditional school/university boundaries.
