Abstract

The model minority myth (MMM) perpetuates the belief that Asian Americans are naturally high achieving and has largely defined the discourse on Asian Pacific Islander and Desi American (APIDA) education. Given this year’s AERA theme, understanding how education research, policy, and practice are shaped and influenced by the MMM is of importance to help provide equal educational opportunities for APIDAs, particularly Southeast Asians, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islanders, and other APIDA ethnics groups who have been historically underrepresented and underserved in education. This symposium challenges this framework by presenting perspectives from researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to extend dialogue among educators across the educational pipeline (e.g., PreK-12, postsecondary).
