Session Summary

29.036 - Building the Latino Pipeline for Medical Careers: The Hispanic Center of Excellence Experience

Fri, April 28, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 213 B

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

The goal of this symposium is to describe the pipeline programs offered by the Hispanic Center of Excellence at the University of Illinois College of Medicine. The Center has become an important resource to the state of Illinois in terms of developing the next generation of Latino health professionals. While Latinos comprise over 16% of the state population—and 22% of K-12 students—they only represent 4% of the state’s physicians and even less in other health professions. Presenters will discuss programmatic strategies, outcomes, barriers and lessons learned for initiatives that span high school to medical students. The topic of this symposium is consistent with the theme of the AERA annual meeting: “Achieving the Promise of Equal Educational Opportunity.”
