Session Summary

56.063 - Problem-Based Learning in Secondary Education: Investigating Hot and Cold Learning Outcomes

Sun, April 30, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 213 B

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium proposal deals with PBL in secondary education. Although numerous PBL implementations exist in secondary schools worldwide, the great majority of research studies deal with PBL in higher education. Therefore, this symposium would like to shed light on PBL research in secondary education. More specifically, it aims to empirically examine the starting points of PBL: fostering more meaningful learning and more motivation. To that end, a set of proposals have been collected that deal with both hot (i.e., self-regulated learning, motivation, interest, and self-efficacy) and cold (i.e., comprehension, retention, (conceptual) knowledge acquisition) learning outcomes in a PBL environment. The proposals aim to move PBL research in secondary education forward by addressing innovative approaches (e.g., micro-analytical approach, concept recall test).
