Session Type: Working Group Roundtable
Modeling and constructing explanations are at the center of NGSS science and engineering practices. Closely intertwined and crucial for students’ learning of science, their productive implementation presents challenges for inservice science teachers, as it requires changing established approaches and routines. This session focuses on science teachers' needs to develop vision, knowledge, practices, and scaffolds for modeling in order to support all learners in constructing science explanations (authors, 2015). We explore contexts and pathways that allow teachers, especially in underserved communities, to productively enact modeling based practices in their classrooms amidst competing demands. This line of research adds important knowledge to the field that has so far mainly focused on students’ and pre-service teachers’ learning to enact modeling.
