Session Type: Symposium
Researchers from the School District of Philadelphia (SDP) and a partner university present the findings of a collaborative, mixed-methods inquiry into suspension in the district. The four papers 1) provide background on this issue in SDP and detail recent policy shifts designed to reduce suspensions; 2) examine the impacts of the policy shift on suspension rates and proportionality; 3) Identify profiles of SDP schools based on disciplinary and suspension practices; and 4) explore school-level suspension practices across the identified school profiles in context and in depth. The symposium represents collaboration between a large urban school district and a partner university that addresses key policy questions via innovative research methods and produces actionable insights that support equity for all students.
