Session Summary

42.057 - Teacher Noticing for Equity: A TRU Perspective

Sat, April 29, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Grand Hyatt San Antonio, Floor: Second Floor, Bowie B

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

The Teaching for Robust Understanding (TRU) framework is a comprehensive framework that supports teacher noticing of (attending to, interpreting, and responding to) important aspects of mathematics classroom activity. In addition to mathematical dimensions that align with the early teacher noticing literature, the TRU framework places equity issues of access to content and student development of agency, ownership and identity at the heart of the powerful student experience.

The five papers represent research programs from universities across the country and partnerships with two major urban school districts. Each paper investigates how the TRU framework supports teacher noticing for equity in a particular social context, as well as what has been learned from local partnerships that suggests directions for improving TRU.
