68.027 - Spatial Justice, Educational Equity, and Critical Pedagogy in the New Latina/o Diaspora

Abstract

Over the past two decades, the New Latino Diaspora (NLD) (Murillo & Villenas, 1997) has reshaped demographic and educational realities in areas of the U.S. not traditionally associated with Latin@ communities. Now, as their presence in these areas remains contested (Hamann & Harklau, 2015), NLD Latin@s find themselves spatially constrained in literal, cultural, and psychic terms. With limited room to maneuver, questions of spatial justice (Soja, 2010) in the complicated terrain of U.S. schools have emerged, representing a pressing challenge of educational opportunity for Latin@s in the NLD, and beyond. With this in mind, our symposium will explore dynamic ways Latin@ youth, communities, families, and teachers are negotiating spatial (in)justice, and turning knowledge into action in contested educational landscapes.
