Session Summary

58.033 - Interest Convergence in a "Postracial" Policy Era: Expanding on Bell's Concept to Address Contemporary Racism

Sun, April 30, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Grand Hyatt San Antonio, Floor: Third Floor, Bonham B

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

In this symposium presenters look to Derrick Bell’s work to offer new insights and approaches to Bell’s seminal concept of Interest Convergence. In this interactive symposium, authors present papers that probe and build upon Bell’s thesis to question the rise of state sanctioned violence and dehumanization of people of color, the resurgence of pronounced colorblind racism and the push towards race-neutral policy implementation. Furthermore, better understanding how modern day post-civil rights interest convergence works can be useful for current movements against anti-blackness, such as #blacklivesmatter in a Trump-informed political climate.
