Session Summary

66.022 - Formative Assessments as a Response to the Standards Reform Movement

Mon, May 1, 8:15 to 9:45am, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Meeting Room Level, Room 221 C

Session Type: Structured Poster Session

Abstract

The term “formative assessment” has been misappropriated or misunderstood by many in the field. However, others have also viewed it as a more authentic process at assessing student learning (Black & Wiliam, 1998; Dunn & Mulvenon, 2006). Audience members and presenters will engage in a thoughtful discussion around various components and projects developed around formative assessments in mathematics (NCTM, 2013) and other content areas. In an effort to make assessment policies more democratized during our current standards reform movement formative assessments can demonstrate an alternative, but more authentic type of assessment of learning. Posters will cover topics around project development, types of formative assessments, instruments and tools, and student work around formative assessments from a variety of disciplines and perspectives.
