Session Type: Symposium
Through an interdisciplinary approach, this symposia presents three perspectives on using Chicanx Studies pedagogies in the classroom as a way to challenge dominant ways of learning. Chicanx children’s and young adult literature, transformative critical media literacy, and the Chicanx Studies classroom as a politicized site of learning provide an opportunity to discuss the various oppressions that Chicanx/Latinx students face in the classroom and how Chicanx Studies pedagogies empower students to decolonize their education. The constant threat on Chicanx Studies, undocumented students, and bilingual education make clear that classrooms remain unsafe spaces for Chicanxs/Latinxs. Therefore, this presentation centers the experiences of Chicanx/Latinx students in order to demonstrate how alternative pedagogies give voice to students, thus inching us closer toward equal educational opportunity.
